History- Alpharetta
history is first known in the 1830’s. The Cherokee Indians were
being resettled. Itinerant setters moved in to this free Indian
lands and became farmers and merchants. The land was given by land
lotteries. This village was named New
Prospect Campground. The land was good for growing cotton.
The town was chartered on December 11, 1858. Alpharetta comes from the Greek words “alpha” meaning first and “retta” meaning town. Before this date the town was called the “Town of Milton ”.
The first permanent landmark was the New Prospect Campground. This spot is located next to a natural spring north of the present downtown. Camp Meetings were held here. These meetings were large social and spiritual meeting which the local farmer families looked forward to each year.
The first town charter allowed businesses and exhibits to be taxed. At the end of 1859 the first City Trustees financial report showed a balance of $1,302.00. Soon a courthouse and jail were constructed. By the 1860’s the town was fairly large with three hotels, several mercantile shops, many churches and a school. There were mainly small farms in the area not Plantations and the majority of the farmers did not own slaves.
Smallpox spread through the town in 1863.
The Courthouse was burned when the left flank of the Union Army passed through this area. Many of the documents were saved because Dr. O.P. Skeleton carried off and hid many of the court documents to Jackson County . Who started the fire is unknown? It is not known if the Courthouse was burned by the Union Soldiers or the retreating Confederates. After the Civil War, Alpharetta suffered hard financial times as did most of the South.
Growth was slow and steady during the next few decades. When the Great Depression hit in the 1930’s the small county of Milton decided to merge with the larger county of Fulton . By doing that the roads in the area would be paved. Alpharetta was merged into Fulton County in 1932.
