Cumming Country Fair & Festival
The Cityof Cumming Fairgrounds hosted its first fair in 1995. The actual fair is in October for two weeks. 40 rides and games are featured over the James H. Drew Exposition Carnival Midway. The Heritage Village lets you see how folks use to live. Included in the Heritage Village is the old fashion Barber Shop, the Blacksmith Shop, the Cider Press, the Cotton Gin, the Doctor's office, the General Store, the Post Office, the Printing Press, the Quilting Party, the Saw Mill, the Shingle Mill, the Syrup Mill, the Water Wheel Corn Mill, the Grist Mill, the Dentist Office, the Steam Engine Shed, the Cumming/Forsyth County Historical Society, the Old Baptist Church, the Old Methodist Church, the One Room School House, the Chicken House, and the Indian Village. The Fair also has great concerts, petting zoos, and stunt shows. The North Georgia Quarter Midget Association races at the Fairgrounds. The Quarter Midget cars, equipment and rules are modified for children between the ages of 5 to 16. Grab your boots and cowboy hat and head to the Fairgrounds to see the "International Professional Rodeo Association" World Championship Rodeo. Watch Bull Riding, Bare Back Riding, Barrel Racing, Calf Roping, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping and Saddle Bronc Riding. Cumming has a rich Native American history. Celebrate that history at the Sawnee Indian Festival Rendezvous! Learn the culture, arts, crafts, language, and even native drum sessions. Walk through the Indian camp and eat roasted corn. See what all the noise is about in November at the Cumming Steam, Antique Tractor and Gas Engine Exposition. Step back in the history of our town! Christmas Celebration at the Fairgrounds is an exciting time filled with hay rides, caroling, photos with Santa and Arts and Craft shows . The best part is the large display of lights which depict different Christmas images. Farmer Markets and Relay for Life are other events held at the Fairgrounds.

Interesting Facts about Cumming, Georgia
Cumming, Georgia was founded in 1833 and first chartered in 1845. The town was first surveyed in 1833. It is located forty miles north of Atlanta. State Route 400 leads north from Atlanta into Forsyth county. The land for Cumming was part of the 1832 Cherokee land lottery. The Cherokee territory Paulding andstretched across what is now Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Lumpkin, Murray, Union counties. This land by a lottery system was distributed to Georgia families. The land was mainly used for agriculture. The name comes from an officer from the War of 1812. His name was Col. William Cumming and he was born July 27, 1788. Wm Cumming was a distinguished Georgian who graduated from Princeton (at that time was the College of New Jersey at Princeton). He studied law at Gould's Law School, Litchfield, Conn. .....
The Federal Road (Highway 369) runs through Forsyth county. This road connected the borders of Georgia with Nashville and Knoxville. This Federal road was used to remove the Creek and Cherokee Indians to Oklahoma. The road started in Athens, Georgia and continued through Jackson, and Hall Counties. The Federal Road Marker located at Highway 9 and Highway 369 says, "The highway coming from the right is the Old Federal Road, northwest Georgia's first vehicular way and the earliest postal route of this area. It began on the southeastern boundary of the Cherokees in the direction of Athens, linking Georgia and Tennessee across the Indian Country. Rights to open the thoroughfare were granted informally by the Cherokees in 1803 and confirmed in the 1805 Treaty of Tellico, Tennessee. 'Daniels,' an early stand and stage stop, on the old trace stood here."
William T. Sherman did not burn or visit Cumming during the Civil War "March to the Sea".
Cumming has had the same mayor since 1970. His name is Henry Ford Gravitt. He is a native to Cumming and was born January 2, 1942.

Junior Samples (born Alvin Samples, Jr. April 10, 1926 to November 13, 1983) from "Hee Haw" was Cumming's most famous personalities. His most famous part was when he played a country use car salesman with the phone number of 1-800-BR5-49. Samples died of a heart attack when he was 57 in 1983. He is buried at Sawnee View Gardens.

Grass in the Grove to Bring Bluegrass Music to Forsyth County. The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department invites citizens to attend the second annual Grass in the Grove Bluegrass Festival. The festival will be held Saturday, September 20, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Shady Grove Campground. The festival will feature traditional bluegrass bands and contemporary bluegrass bands, including Honi Deaton and Dream, Hardline Drive, Steel String Session, Georgia Mudcats, The Suggins Brothers and The Harmon Family....

Family Haven presents 'Taste of Forsyth'CUMMING - Family Haven recently announced the sixth annual "Taste of Forsyth" April 20 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. to be held at the Cumming Fairgrounds. All proceeds from the Taste of Forsyth will go to the building of the new Family Haven shelter that will begin construction by Summer 2008. The Taste of Forsyth is an outdoor food festival including local vendors and live entertainment. Food vendors are given the opportunity to introduce their food to the community. Visitors will have the chance to enjoy the food of local restaurants, caterers, bakeries and ice cream shops while visiting the local art and craft vendors and exploring the business expo. People can also climb the rock wall or take a jump in a moonwalk at the kid's corner.....

Poole's Mill Covered BridgeThis bridge was built in 1901 by Bud Gentry. It is 94.6 feet long by 14.5 feet wide. It's truss is town lattice. It runs over Settendown Creek. It has a parking area, picnic area and historic marker..., The site of the bridge datesback to the 1820's. The original construction of this bridge began with a contractor who drilled all the holes in the lattice members in the wrong place. After fitting up the pieces he realized they were in the wrong place and abandoned the project. Work was finished by Bud Gentry but required drilling new holes in the old members. You can still see the misplaced holes today. Even the treads of the bridge are members that could not be used because of the misplaced holes. Treads with holes side-by-side were to have been used in the chords, while those with diagonally offset holes would have been lattice members....

This 18-hole course cuts through the rolling foothills of North Georgia with several elevation changes on the front 9. The back 9, however, is much more open and flat as it winds its way through streams and wetlands. At 6,903 yards from the Gold Tees, this par 71 demands long carries off the tee and accurate approach shots into medium sized greens with many subtle breaks and undulations. Along with being a nominee for Golf Digest's Best New Public Course of 2000, Hampton Golf Village also won best new public course on Atlantagolfer.com....

Sawnee Campground is a very well prized campground by folks in Buford. Sawnee Campground is right by the Brookshire Creek Trail. Lakes are brilliant; Lake Sidney Lanier is a lake that's in the vicinity of Sawnee Campground. Buford Dam is lovely and it's near Sawnee Campground, and a good site close by is Bowmans Island Shoals. Do pay a visit to Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area if you're here at Sawnee Campground, and swing by Baldridge Creek it's a good spot to go to....
I Love America and so does Cumming, Georgia! Patriotism is part of the culture of Cumming, Georgia. With sincere appreciation, the community came together to honor the veterans which live in this area. Veterans Memorial Blvd is located in the heart of the downtown. The city of Cumming commissioned Sculptor Gregory Johnson to create a Memorial to honor the brave soldiers who lost their lives in wars serving our country. The grounds feature a ladder back chair with boots which hold a dog tag of Forsyth County citizen who served in the Vietnam War. Draped over the top of the chair is a soldier's uniform and helmet. On ceremonial day a US Flag joins these bronzed pieces. The inscription of the Memorial is as follows: "Realizing anew, the full portion of sacrifice paid by the Sons and Daughters of Cumming, Forsyth County, Georgia, in the defense of life and individual rights, we, the citizens in gratitude and honor, dedicate this monument to their memory; and in doing so, pledge to preserve and protect the freedoms for which they so bravely fought. This place will be held in reverence for all those who wish to pause and remember how we came to live in this Sweet land of Liberty. America, America, God Shed His Grace on thee!"
